Replacing the floor and walls is another way to upgrade your bathroom, but this is a project that requires some work and budget considerations. Options like vinyl and laminate are cheaper and more DIY-friendly than tile.

Retile the Floor and Walls

Whether you have damaged tiles or just want a new look, retiling your bathroom is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update the space. It can be a tricky DIY project, however, so only attempt it if you have some experience with home improvement.

To retile the walls, mark the middle of each wall so you have a reference point. This will ensure that your tiles are evenly spaced across the wall.

Then, apply a waterproofing membrane over the subfloor of your bathroom. You can also use 1/4-inch cement board screwed to the subfloor, rolled over with a water-resistant membrane and then tiled. It’s important that your new bathroom floor is moisture-resistant to prevent mold, cracking and other damage. It’s usually best to hire a pro for this step.

Redo the Grout

Grout can become stained from mildew or hard water, leaving your bathroom looking dingy. You can try bleaching the grout or using one of the new grout reviver products to restore it to a clean appearance.

Start by removing the old grout with a grout rake, taking care not to scratch or chip the tiles. When the old grout is gone, apply replacement grout in a color that matches or complements the tile. Grout can be purchased in powder form to mix with water, or pre-mixed and ready to use. Apply it with a grout float, spreading it in long diagonal strokes. Be sure to wipe off excess grout as you go with a damp sponge.

To finish the job, caulk around the tub and in vertical corners where walls meet, using silicone tub-and-tile caulk.

Add a New Light Fixture

A fresh coat of paint and a new light fixture are inexpensive ways to make your bathroom feel brand-new. Choose a warm or cool hue that suits your taste and adds an updated look to the space.

Screw the new fixture base into the ceiling box. Many modern fixtures come with a plate that fits different types of ceiling boxes, and the screws should thread right through the insulation. If you have a hard time seeing the screw holes, try using a wet-dry shop vac to vacuum up the drywall dust.

If the old light fixture had a ceiling plate, remove it and expose the capped wires. Usually, there will be a black hot wire, a white neutral wire and a green or bare copper ground wire. Connect the neutral and ground wires together with a wire connector, then connect the black hot wire to one of the wire leads from the new fixture.

Paint or Refinish Cabinet Doors

Depending on your skill level and the amount of work you need done, you may be able to do some or all of the demolition and painting yourself. This can save a lot of money on contractor fees, which average between $100 and $200 an hour.

If you do decide to refinish your cabinets, make sure you have ample space to work and that the surface is flat and dry. It is also a good idea to cover up anything you don’t want covered in paint drips.
