What to Expect From a Bathroom Renovation Project

bathroom restoration

Ideally, you should remodel bathrooms during times when they won’t be in use to minimize disruption. If your facility has multiple bathroom areas, it’s also helpful to work on one at a time so that the other restrooms can remain functional throughout the project.

A bathroom remodel differs from a renovation. For example, removing or changing walls is a renovation, while adding a window or doors is a remodel.

Plumbing

During bathroom renovation, your contractor will be working on the plumbing to update or repair the sink, toilet, bathtub and shower. They will also install new fixtures and a showerhead, and they may need to replace the faucet.

Leaking pipes are a major issue that should be addressed right away before they cause water damage or lead to a high water bill. Your plumber will be able to find the leak and fix it before it gets out of hand.

Before your contractor removes the old fixtures from your bathroom, they will mark the location of the water and electrical hookups to prevent them from getting damaged during the remodeling process. Keeping this information handy will help you avoid expensive repair bills in the future.

Electrical

Any area that has access to water (bathrooms) needs to have its own dedicated electrical circuit that is GFCI protected. This is a requirement by code and must be done during the remodel.

Adding new lighting fixtures and switches is usually part of any bathroom renovation. This can also include replacing old light bulbs with LED lights that consume less energy.

A full bathroom remodel is usually a large project that involves changing the layout of the room. This may mean moving the toilet, sink, tub/shower, and even tearing down walls. This type of remodel should always be done by a licensed and insured electrician. Having one company handle the entire remodel will save time and money. Also during this phase, the electrical service panel may need an upgrade to accommodate the additional load.

Flooring

Bathrooms represent a very humid, moist environment where mold and mildew thrive. Over time, these organisms can make homeowners sick without them even realizing it.

Bathroom flooring must be moisture resistant. Tile is a popular choice but vinyl and sheet vinyl are also options. Paint is another option, but it may require a special type of paint that resists mildew and mold.

Replacing a bathtub with a shower is an easy and cost-effective way to upgrade a bathroom. However, expanding or changing a bathroom’s floor plan will add to the remodel cost. These types of remodels will usually require rerouting electrical wiring; insulation; redrilling and transferring joists to accommodate new plumbing; framing; and drywall costs. On average, such a project will cost $5,000 and up.

Cabinets

Cabinets (also called cupboards) are furniture pieces that hold items like towels, soap, toothbrushes, and cleaning supplies. They can add storage, organization, and design to any bathroom.

Many bathrooms have limited or inadequate storage, but a simple remodeling job can add new shelving or build out a linen or supply closet. Many existing cabinets can be refinished instead of replaced, which saves money and time.

A new vanity can add a focal point to the room and help hide plumbing behind it. Vanities are available in a variety of styles, materials, and sizes, and most can be customized to fit your space. New countertops are also an option, which come in many varieties from inexpensive laminates to natural granite. The best countertop materials stand up to moisture and are easy to clean.

Lighting

In the bathroom, it is essential that the space has ample bright light to shave and apply makeup. However, this lighting should be softer than overhead bright light to avoid harsh shadows and overexposure of the eyes first thing in the morning.

Ambient lighting comes from wall fixtures, like sconces or ceiling lights with diffused shades. This type of light gives the bathroom a soft and warm ambiance.
